This is the seventh year that the Infosys Foundation USA has sponsored summer PD for US public school teachers, and CodeJoy’s third year partnering up with the group to deliver our particular flavor of virtual PD. This year’s Summer Institute includes 19 PD courses in a summer program that is sure to be fun, hands-on, and dynamic yet again this year!
While in years past the Summer Institute had been in person, the transition to a fully virtual experience has persisted beyond the Pandemic. This is because so many MORE teachers can participate from the comfort of their own homes! Thanks to the sponsorship of Infosys Foundation USA, FREE hardware is shipped to participants’ homes, and live, virtual PD is delivered at times that work for educators.
Three Amazing CodeJoy Courses
In summer 2023, CodeJoy taught 356 teachers with 3 different courses, ultimately reaching over an incredible 285,000 students!
This year, we’re excited to be utilizing hardware from BirdBrain Technologies and BBC micro:bit along with coding programing from Microsoft MakeCode as well as a deep dive into AI tools in order to serve even more teachers and librarians with 3 different courses!
Robot Mini Golf for the Classroom: Ready to hit a hole-in-one with engagement? Build a thematic mini golf course with robots! This PD course uses the Hummingbird Robotics Kit for a hands-on adventure in crafting, coding, and building. Adapt it to any subject and watch STEM learning and PBL merge through creative robotics! BYO hot glue gun, and we’ll supply the robot! This curriculum is aligned to CSTA standards.
Beyond the Hype: Practical AI for Educators: Beyond the hyperbolic fear mongering, the reality of AI is much more cooperative and creative than you think! In this course, we’ll use AI as our creative co-pilot, fueling innovative lessons and deeper student engagement. This hands-on course takes you beyond the hype, equipping you with practical AI tools and real-world applications for educators.
Micro:bit in the Wild: This brand new PD takes the technological style of CodeJoy's virtual PD and brings it directly to the great outdoors! CodeJoy's Director of Learning (and Micro:bit Champion!) Amanda Jeane Strode will dive into this new curriculum of BBC micro:bit activities to build students' environmental literacy skills and show how the micro:bit is a powerful tool outdoors as much as in the classroom. No prior experience with micro:bit or environmentalism is required! This curriculum is aligned to CSTA, NGSS, and STEELS standards.
Don’t Wait! Space is Limited!
Registration is first-come, first-serve, opening on March 18th, 2024 and closing May 31st - UNLESS courses max out capacity. (Last year, CodeJoy’s courses maxed out in VERY QUICKLY!)
Due to the limited space and enormous demand for the high-quality CS and maker education that is available through the Summer Institute, each public school teacher or librarian is limited to signing up for a maximum of 1 course in hopes of being able to use the valuable but limited space available to reach even more public school teachers and librarians across the USA. We are proud to be a part of this program again this year and can’t wait to learn with talented teachers and librarians from all backgrounds!
