There is no questioning the fact that we really love the micro:bit here at CodeJoy. This versatile tool has made it possible for educators all over the world to get acquainted with computer science and physical computing. We are not the only ones who love the micro:bit either! We have worked with some amazing educators over the last few years who know a whole lot more about this tool than we do. Many of these educators have been part of the micro:bit Champions program.
The micro:bit Champions program is a cohort of educators who apply, and if accepted, meet with their region and the international cohort several times throughout the year. “A micro:bit Champion helps remove barriers to learning digital skills by using the micro:bit” (microbit.org). Champions are tasked to share the micro:bit with others! In past years, Champions have done everything from lead workshops at their school to running large scale micro:bit events.
If you are someone who loves the micro:bit and is looking to share that love with others, it is definitely worth applying to be a micro:bit champion. Be sure to read the criteria for: who should apply, what micro:bit champions do, and what micro:bit champions receive.
Applications are open now and close Jan 24th!
To learn more about the program, here are some testimonials from good friends of ours who are North American champions.
Rudy Escobar, Modesto, CA
"Using the micro:bit offers so much, and no matter how much you already know about it, becoming a micro:bit Champion opens the door to continuous learning. As a champion, you can explore new ways to integrate the micro:bit into computer science, technology, and other subjects. You'll also have the chance to learn from others, share your expertise, and co-develop resources that are equitable, inclusive, and culturally relevant for students.
Beyond these opportunities, being a micro:bit Champion connects you to a global professional network of passionate educators. This community is always ready to provide fresh ideas, inspiration, and support whenever you need it. More than just a network, the micro:bit community feels like a family. It is a supportive group committed to empowering students and educators worldwide."
Karie Huttner, Verona, WI
“The micro:bit Champion program has provided me the opportunity to connect with educators around the world who are using the micro:bit in their classrooms. I am continuously inspired by what is shared in the community and I love sharing my journey with my students using the micro:bit to learn about the power of coding.”
Tonya Coats, Rancho Cucamonga, CA
“My experience with the micro:bit Champions program has been rewarding and inspiring. The program builds an amazing community of educators, offering opportunities for collaboration and idea-sharing. Providing feedback and staying updated on micro:bit developments has helped me bring engaging strategies to workshops. For new applicants, join with an open mind and a willingness to learn. This program is about more than physical computing, it’s about being part of a network that elevates computer science education worldwide.”
Gurbey Demirturk, Houston, TX
“The best part of the micro:bit Champions program has been the incredible networking opportunities. I connected with amazing educators who showcased the full potential of micro:bit in ways I might never have discovered on my own.”
Amanda Jeane Strode, Pittsburgh, PA
“I love the micro:bit. I was really lucky to be part of the micro:bit Champions pilot program. In its formation, there were originally only 99 champions accepted from 30 countries. It was so amazing to get a global view of CS and physical computing and gain global friendships. I feel extremely fortunate to have met people doing amazing things all over the world.
My favorite thing about the program over the years is the supportive network I’ve built, particularly here in North America. Whenever you go to a conference, post on socials, or need someone to bounce ideas off, champions are there for you! We have a group of North American champions that pretty consistently check in with each other and we are always willing to offer a helping hand. It is a great network and has become more of a family for me.
Anyone who is looking to step up and share the micro:bit with others should apply to be a micro:bit Champion!”
Kristin Burrus, Chattanooga, TN
“The micro:bit Champions [program] has been some of the best professional development I have ever been a part of. I learn so much about how to use technology with students each time we meet. The educators in our group are exceptionally knowledgeable, friendly, and willing to share.”
Katie Henry, Pittsburgh, PA
